Addiction A Brain Disease

Addiction A Brain Disease.

I have created this post after being prompted about a post on FaceBook, around the frustration about a awareness march organised by the NGO Sharing Without Shame in Eldorado Park Johannesburg. What became apparent for me is still the belief that Substance Abuse or addiction is  a Moral issue. There is a lot of frustration around mental health and in-particular when it comes to addicts!!!!  Here is a clever doctor that talks about the brain and addiction and how that relates to substance abuse. A SHARP we can get people clean but the real challenge is when they return to their environments where relapse happens. (BTW relapse isn’t failure it just part of the process) The new challenge now though is how do we create a culture of wellness around substance abuse disorder. I personally have moved away from the paradigm that once an addict always an addict but rather sit in the perspective of wellness whether some one is using a substance or not. There is still a lot of stigma around this issue and that is a result of ignorance.I have been expanding the services at SHARP and hence the name change to SHARP Recovery Solutions – Substance Abuse Treatment and Addiction Recovery in an attempt to educate people around the vastness of this problem.  So insted of blaming and feeling sorry for myself I would rather take action and respond from a place of empowerment by providing the facts and educating all that are interested in making a differance with this contencious issue. love you all dislex david
